White stuff report

Wenyu Zhang, 42, of Rocklin, Placer County, was tragically found dead after disappearing into the blizzard at Squaw Valley.

Tahoe residents posted some crazy images of the whiteout conditions up at the lake.  No wonder Wenyu disappeared.  Stay inside, people, when it gets like this!

Closer to the Pacific, snow levels around the Bay Area dropped as low as 1,500 feet on Friday afternoon as the back end of a storm brought unstable conditions to the region.
Mountain peaks across the area, from Mount St. Helena in the North Bay to the Santa Lucia Mountains near Carmel Valley, received dustings of snow.

  1. You should never underestimate the ocean or white-out conditions because both will kill you before you know it.

  2. Those are not even close to the whiteouts on Adak, Alaska in winter. When the Navy declared a Condition Alpha, there was no travelling anywhere except by emergency vehicles. One was so bad that when we came out of the house we were painting, the white van was invisible in the driveway, and an outstretched hand was just a wavering shadow. We couldn't drive back to the shop. We sat there a good 45-60 minutes waiting for it to let up. We eventually made it down to the Chief's Club. Ended up stuck there with plentiful food and beer for another 3 hours. One of the best afternoons on the clock, ever.
