And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

“Fight for the Water Hole” – art by Frederic Remington, 1903
This one actually has a basis in fact. The story is told that in an effort to combat the Indians from crossing the desert along our southern border to make raids from Mexico, soldiers were stationed in small detachments guarding the water holes. I guess it beat chasing them. That does look like the area just south and west of the Davis Mountains in Texas, although I have never seen a water hole look quite like that.
One of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteMine too, along with "Dash for the Timber."
