And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? Portrait of Naiche [Na-chez, Nai-chi-ti, Natchez], Chiricahua Apache, son of Cochise Photographer: Ben Wittick, 1890
That could be a Stevens .22 rifle he's holding. Can anyone confirm?
ReplyDeleteStevens introduced the .22LR in 1888, so it would be possible. Somehow I never thought of a Chiricahua Apache with one of those rifles!
It appears to be a Frank Wesson carbine, probably in 32 rimfire caliber. I have one that is almost identical to the one in the photograph.
