US Army officer Peter Conover Hains. The first photo shows him as a Major General at his desk in April 1918, the second as a First Lieutenant in 1862. Hains was the only person to serve in both the American Civil War and World War I.

  1. According to history, he also served during the Spanish - American War.

And he may have done service during the Indian Wars of the 1870's.

  3. Grandfather, a Major in WWII had a good friend who fought in WWI. I met granpa's friend a few times. It is interesting to note the connections between generations like this. Civil War to WWI, then to WWII and to me. I'm now 61, and his friend was in his 70's when I met him.

    1. President John Tyler was born in 1790, became President in 1841, passing away in 1862. One of his sons (out of 15 children), Lyon Gardiner Tyler, was born in 1853. He passed away in 1935 but had 2 sons (Lyon Gardiner Tyler, Junior, born in 1925 and Harrison Ruffin Tyler, born in 1923.). The first son passed away in 2020 but the younger son is still alive today. That's 235 years.
