  1. This is another example of why Rogers Lake at Edwards AIr Force Base is a national treasure. The “Bone” aka B-1 in the photo had a nose gear fail to extend somewhere in the middle of the USA. As I recall, the crew refueled from a KC-135 that happened to be in the area and flew to Edwards. Like many crippled aircraft before and after, the crew landed it on the smooth lakebed with minimal damage.

    1. The dry lake is quite a sight. I went there to see Columbia land on July 4, 1982. Hell of a party.

    1. The way I understand it DEI hire means that an unqualified person was hired because he/she meets a specific racial/ethnic criteria.

The Trump admin is filled with DEI hires. Hegseth is clearly unqualified and yet hired because of his race/gender. Same with Mike Waltz, Kristi Noem or Howard Lutnick all clearly unqualified for their positions and yet there they are. All DEI hires.

Just for fun, compare Hegseth's resume to anyone from any party who has ever held the same position.

Hire unqualified people and you will get the kind of results we are getting from this admin.

    2. It was those "qualified" people who got us into this current mess.

  3. And the other Boeing airframe engineers laughed when Joe insisted on the skid plate in the nose.

  4. I remember this, I was there. A maintenance (of which I was one) ran a wiring harness through the gear causing it to jam. We did a TCTO and required a 7 level inspection to try and prevent it. Shit happens.

    1. Hmmm. I was at Edwards crew-chiefing F-16s and watched an episode like this. 1988/1989 time frame. The crew dumped fuel north of the base, did a beautiful landing, aerobraked holding the nose up as they shut down all four engines to limit FOD. A giant air bag was used to lift the nose high enough, a hook grabbed the up-lock cam, a good yank and the nose landing gear gravity-fell into place. Gouged up a little lakebed, some scuffs on the radome and bulkhead, not much else.

  6. I have pics of an F-15 doing this at Clark AFB in the Philippines in 1986. The W.O.W. switch failed. (WOW= Weight on Wheels). I wonder if I should try to Share the Photo.
