And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
There's an awful lot of wisdom and simple truths to be found in Calvin and Hobbes. Especially those days when you need to be wearing your lucky rocket ship underpants! Steve_in_Ottawa
This. I may miss them both, but I'm glad they decided to go out on high notes, not continue into Current Year and being forced to choose a side in the culture wars.
Of course there is something to be said for lines like this from Raymond Chandler's "Red Wind" - "There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks."
