And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I saw these in Bergen, Norway in 1998, and again off Greenland about 10 years later.
Snowfall off Greenland was different, with no mountains in the background. Our ship had so much accumulated snow on deck that the Captain closed it except for people working in pairs.
The tailbuoys of our streamers (seismic exploration) used to accumulate so much spray ice that we had to take golf clubs (that a crewmember on leave had stored), and take the workboat six miles behind the ship to knock off the ice. That guy got a new set of clubs because we pretty much destroyed his first set.
Pretty!
ReplyDeleteSeeing auroras like that is high on my bucket list. Living in a place that has seen auroras once in recorded history means a trip ... somewhere.
ReplyDeleteTo Iceland! The youngest daughter spent some time there and saw them easily.

Good times.
