    1. The twisted handle adjustable wrench can be pretty early. The first wrenches
      weren't made until after the first steel was produced in the US in the 1840s.
      Before that all tools were imported from England or Euorope. I've collected a couple of hundred early wrenches over the years from tiny 3" to 24" railroad
      wrenches. The red handle pipe wrench on the left is from the 40s or 59s and is fairly common.
      Interestingly the first wrenches were made to twist bars out of Castle window s during a seige.
