  4. In our first apartment, we could hear downstairs and over one pounding abalone on the counter. We knew what was for dinner.

    Either it was shed, or else sea otters probably got to the insides for lunch some time back.

  7. In the late 1960's, my cousin and I would go scuba & snorkel diving at Bird Rock near La Jolla, CA. We'd probably collect 4 to 6 decent sized abalone each weekly trip during the summer that he'd sell to local restaurants at $20 a pop. Good money for a teen at that time.
    They're seriously protected now so that's no longer a possibility.
