.458 Winchester Magnum. Those be some big boys!

  1. Saw a guy shoot one of those at a range once. The recoil knocked him off the bench and onto his back. Obviously it was the first time he fired it. It may have been the last too.

  2. Look like Remington 405 grain soft (flat) points. One of my favorites. My old model 70 handles them well

    1. Those 405 grain Remington bullets also work great in the .45-70. Steve_in_Ottawa

  4. Just in case there is a rogue elephant coming down your street. It uses the case for the 375 Holland & Holland Magnum which has that distinctive belt at the base.

  5. About 20 years ago, a company called McCann Industries started making an M1 Garand in .458 Win Mag. Sadly, not made any more, but they are out there used for somewhere north of $4,000. If you can find one. I had a Weatherby Mark V in 458 for a while until someone offered me too much for it to turn down. Those aren't made anymore either but much easier to find.

  6. Some notable loading guy developed a cut down .458, for the TC Contender, early 80's but can't remember his name. Produced respectable numbers.

    1. Could that be a 458-400 Express? Dad had a Ruger 45 Colt that was modded for that round.

    2. .458 American. Used a 2” case. Essentially a modern.45-70, built for magnum pressure. Problem was that it would chamber in a.458 Win Mag or .458 Lott, or any other cartridge based on the H&H case. Very dangerous consequences if you pull the trigger.

  7. Looks like classis dum-dum bullets.

  8. The.458 Lott is the same case but longer, and gives more velocity. Also it’s throat is long enough to seat the 405 FN in the rear groove which makes even more room for powder.

OTOH, the 405 is designed for 1200-1600fps, so you don’t want to shoot it at 2700fps. Granted the Speer 400FN is even softer. Both are built for low velocity.

  9. I have a Ruger #1 in .458WINMAG chambering. Bought it on a whim when flush with cash after working overseas for two years. 500gr. loads are punishing. Have it just in case a rogue elephant gets loose.... - Snakepit

  10. If a 308 or a 12 ga slug can't handle it, I'm hiding (because I can't run anymore). A high pressure/velocity, 45-70 through a Marlin was more than enough recoil for me.
