  1. king a pipe symbolize smart engineer type, a cigar a rich banker type, and a cigarette a hardworking get'er done type. I begged by dad to buy all that comic/ magazine stuff back the 50's. usually worked if I mow the lawn cleaned the garage.

    1. I disagree. I remember when "Lucky Strike green has gone to war" and many of the adults smoked. I don't remember any of them complaining about lack of availability, even during the war.

  3. My father got that set, or one very close to it as his Christmas Story present as a boy in the 1930s and my brother and I played with it in the 60s. There is a lot of steel in that box.

  5. As a relatively new pipe smoker (about 1 1/2 years now) I wonder why pipes suddenly disappeared from view. There were pipes in every ad. There were "No pipe or cigar smoking" signs in bars and restaurants. As a kid, most adult males in my life smoked, a large portion of them smoked pipes (I'm a child of the 80s and my cub scout events had pipe smokers there).

Then suddenly pipes vanished. If you watch old media, or look at old ads, they were ubiquitous. Record album covers, publicity photos, books, movies and tv... all had pipes.

Pipe smoking still has enough adherents that my grocery store chain still has pipe tobacco in the cage with the cigs, albeit down on the bottom shelf in the corner, and most of the cleaned up head shops have bags of cheap pipe tobacco if you ask. There are a bunch of new pipe smokers too, and there are youtube channels to help you get started. YTPC (youtube pipe community) is a tag that many of them use.

Pipe smoking is cheap, you don't inhale so the health risks are reduced, and I find it relaxing and contemplative to smoke a pipe. Cigs are for work, cigars for celebrating, and a pipe for relaxing... (If you smoke a pipe too fast, you will burn your tongue and the tobacco doesn't taste good.)

Plus, I like the counter cultural thumb in the eye of taking up smoking.
