  1. It takes force to change the direction of airflow. There is a moment arm from the air intake to the C/G and the longer it is the more force is required to change direction. Moving that scoop back close to the C/G gave the 51 a huge maneuverability advantage over radial engine fighters taking cooling air from the very front of the aircraft. Notice on the F-16 the air intake is way back under the cockpit. One of the visible differences between the F-22 ATF prototype and the production model is the the engine intakes were moved aft.
