And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
My dad was an adding machine mechanic starting at Underwood in the thirties. He worked on Sundstrand (Underwood's, I think), AddoX (Swedish), Olivetti (was bought by or bought Underwood). He said the Addo-X was unique in that when replacing parts, the parts fit. No filing or bending as on other machines. When the Bomar Brain arrived, it was the end and he became warehouse manager for the office supply place he worked for. At the dentist the subject of what my dad did for a living. When I said "Adding Machine Mechanic), the hygienist said, "What's an adding machine?" Probably a couple of other things she didn't know, too.
At my first job after college, I was an assistant buyer at a large department store in Minneapolis. It was the early 70's and manually operated comptometers were the "calculators" of the day. What a thrill when Texas Instruments $99 electronic calculators were introduced.

I wonder how many of those were used to bludgeon someone to death?
ReplyDeleteWhen did white gloves go out of style?
ReplyDeleteOut of style? I would guess that was around the time when women began picking their noses in public.
Delete15 digits isn't enough to keep track of what the guv spends in one second.
