And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Before they grew the beards, just after their first album, still nobody knew who they were. They came to our local YMCA and several of us were standing in the parking lot deciding whether to go in or not. But the acid kicked in very fast and now we were totally useless. ZZ Top came outside and asked us if we're coming in. Somebody mumbled... "I dunno... 6 bucks?" Then ZZ Top yelled at us... "Git yer butts inside, RIGHT NOW!!" We were in a very sensitive condition and didn't like ZZ Top screaming at us so we obeyed and stepped inside for free. There were maybe 20 people in the whole room. They said, "We're ZZ Top from Houston, Texas and we are going to rock your ass!" And they did... so effectively that we were in shock and awe and totally unworthy.
I spent an evening in a dive bar in Galveston called “The Wizzard” When asked about the name, the owner, a lovely elderly lady said her name was Dorothy and that her friends from high school suggested the name, ala Wizard of Oz. “Why the two Z’s?” “Oh, that’s because of their band…” She went to high school with Billy and Frank and Dusty. Claimed they actually played when the bar opened in the 70’s till the cops shut them down for violating the fire capacity of the building. She was so casual about it, and went into a level of detail that could only be true. Unfortunately it’s a hipster bar now with sweetened drinks and ironic paintings in the walls. Progress I guess.
Saw ZZ at least 3 times in the 70s and early 80s! Best shows ever! One starter band "POINT BLANK" was rockin to the point where they were called out 3 times to play some more tunes. Hard rockin band for sure. You can find it on You Tube
Sharp dressed Men???
ReplyDeleteIf I remember right, the guy in the chair is a heck of a golfer.
The only guy without a beard has the last name of "Beard."
ReplyDeleteI think I have every one of their CD's. Great music. Great videos. One of my great regrets is I never got to see them perform live.
ReplyDeleteThey're touring right now with Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Sharp Dressed Simple Man tour.
Delete66% of the Top is touring with a Skynyrd cover band. There, I fixed it for ya.
DeleteBilly Gibbons IS ZZ Top
DeleteDusty Hill (on the left) is no longer with us. RIP Sharp Dressed Man!
ReplyDeleteGreatest band i ever saw live, and i saw some big name in my 70 years. UNREAL that 3 guys could make that sound.
