That had to cost a pretty penny

  1. We've got a smaller but surprisingly similar to that one in the boat yard. Just got the mast down & the boat under cover & will start replacing the teak deck next week. My back & knees already hurt.

    1. Owned and lived aboard a 42' Alden design (#616) built at Thompson Boat Works in Chicago in 1936. Had edge nailed teak decks. Been there done that dont envy you one bit.

  5. Watch Leo's Tally Ho project on YT (Sampson Boat Company, his middle name). Fantastic series, an almost real-time restoration of a boat not unlike this one only about half the size. When he started, he estimated the final worth of the boat to be about $350,000, but I think what he's ended up with is worth north of a million.

Here's the first episode. The guy started with nothing and this project is now a global phenomenon. It is a fascinating and amazing thing.

  7. There is a 40' Alden for sale for very (very!) reasonable price. Rockport, Maine
She's not bristol but quite sail-able right now.
She simply needs a new master, the old is too gotten along in years.

  8. La Spina. Gorgeous boat. First Italian-built 12 meter. Offered for sale (or at least was) a few years back. https://www.grabauinternational.com/news/new-listing-1929-classic-international-12m/

  10. For the record, I was way, way off. Tally Ho is bigger than this boat, 13.6 meters at the waterline.

  11. Helped my dad move a big cabin cruiser down to the hoist in Wildwood NJ to pull it out. 35/40 ft, or so. Belle of the 1929 NY Boat Show. About '73/'74? Thing was pretty well rotted. Cabin extended near to the transom. Lots of room inside. He bought it for the twin engines setup. Pair of twin industrial Ford 302 v8's. Couple years old, if that, in a failed attempt to restore the beast. Dad wanted them for a custom sport fisher that had bad IH? engines. Those had updraft/sidedraft? carbs, so we had to raise the rear deck height to fit the Fords. Boat was built entirely out of teak (or mahogany) for some millionaire that went broke. The beast got cut up for the landfill, after stripping out the fittings and tanks.
