And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I was on a work crew in the early 1970s. We did exactly this on our lunch break. A couple guys dived in head first, but no way I was doing that. Feet first only, off the top rail. Probably just a few feet higher than this bridge here. Good times. I think I was 15 or 16.
When me and my cousin were about 14 we were at the Colorado River and climbed up on a huge rock about 40 ft above the river. Adults were daring us to jump which would have been certain death in the swift current.
I was always taught you never jump or dive into water of unknown depth. knew a man who jumped off a pier and hit a pylon..in a wheel chair a quadriplegic now with little use of body except his hands with limits.
Don't jump! Lot of old bridges are placed where there was a natural ford. At least check the depth of the water first. Drop the wife first.

ReplyDeleteWe always tested the depths before jumping off bridges.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the regular summer hangout. I am sure they all know the depth to a certainty. Great way to grow up.
ReplyDeleteI believe that you're exactly right. Whenever possible I do do a snorkel recon
