  4. Just read “The Wager” which was wrecked rounding the horn. Good book if you want to learn about life on an early 18th century Man of War.

  7. If you've never read Dana's "2 Years Before the Mast", you owe it to yourself to do so. He's the guy Dana Point is named for, and possibly the best account of shipboard life in the 1830's that has ever been written.
    Multiple attempts & failures to "Round the Horn" (southern tip of South America) due to horrible weather were not at all uncommon in those days.
