And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

HMS Valiant passing Clydebank, February, 1916. HMS Valiant was battleships built for the Royal Navy during the early 1910s, participated in two world wars.
In case you're not aware, the old dreadnought Battleship Texas is in drydock right now, in Galveston, getting some extensive work done.

From a thread comment: "The governor signed the bill less than a month ago that provides an additional $25 million in funds. This will allow them to extend dry dock time at least through the end of December and allow a number of additional repairs that will greatly extend the life of the ship's hull. Without that additional funding, they were only able to address glaring problems in the scores of voids and tanks between the inner and outer hulls, leaving most of them untreated. It was felt that with a now completely dry hull, corrosion in those spaces would be greatly slowed, but not eliminated. With the new funding, they now have the money to open up manholes to everything, media blast it to bare metal and epoxy coat it. With that, both sides of the outer shell plating, interior framing and the inner surface of the inner hull will be thoroughly protected. An extreme confidence builder was when the ship was raised out of the water and marine growth pressure washed off last September, they found that the anti corrosion coatings applied in 1989 were still intact. This is a solid indication that new coatings that will replace it should last even longer than 30 years. All of this will provide more protection for the hull than it has ever had during the 111 years of her existence."
There is nothing that can't be done with an unlimited amount of other peoples money. Even maintain an ancient battleship that isnt even valuable enough as a museum to get enough paying customers to pay for fully maintaining it.
They should do for the Texas what has been done for the North Carolina; float her in a pool just large enough for the hull and isolated from other waters.
It is deplorable that Texas was so neglected for so long. Now hopefully she gets all that is needed to preserve for a long life. Why, I don't know much. But if to preserve, than it should be to the fullest.
The U.S. just destroyed the last mustard and sarin gas from WWI. 100+ years later.
