114 in Redding today, but a chilly 101/102 up at Hat Creek.
The Orange Car arrives, but is dwarfed by the fire trucks.
Wasters in the wild proudly fly the flag.
Gotta be an old tractor at any BBQ worth the sauce,
Classic. Swimming in the pond. If ever there was a day for it, this was the day. Could there be bluegills in there?
The food was, of course, excellent.
Live music. I was a bit in awe over the quality of the singing. Very good indeed.
All in all, a great drive up to Hat Creek, into somewhat cooler (or less blistering) heat, and great food. Dropped some money as well in pockets of the crafters who had booths there. The daughter got a ceramic goblet which is perfect for the sangria I've got aging in the fridge. Ha!
Shame someone is letting that model D sink into oblivion. I used to show a beautifully restored 36 D with my ex FIL. He had all the JD models from 1936 (dob). I like the unstyled vs styled.

Did you happen to cross paths with the guy that thanked you for your original post about the Hat Creek VFD BBQ? That would have been fun to meet him.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately not. I thought I'd catch him at the T-shirt booth, but it was only gals working when we were there. Next time, maybe.
DeleteA small fundraiser community BBQ in California could be pulled pork, pork shoulder, tri-tip, brisket, or chicken. The sides can also widely vary. California does not have a BBQ identity like Memphis, St Louis, Eastern Carolina's, Western Carolina's, North Georgia, South Georgia, Florida, and Texas where BBQ is clearly defined with meat, sauces, and sides.
ReplyDeleteWhen I had a job in California I would hit any community BBQ that popped up. One of the best was the Garlic Festival in Gilroy. Another good one was a Poker run through wine country hosted By the Porch Monkey's in San Miguel. Each stop you bought a card and glass of wine. They threw a huge BBQ and party after the run where the wine and beer was flowing freely. I decided it was prudent to pull out my sleeping bag to sleep next to my bike that night to avoid a DUI. I ditched the run red tee shirt before I came home where the Hooligan's are the predominate MC in my area. It is not a good idea to wear a Porch Monkey, friend's of Hell's Angels in Hooligan/Outlaw area. When I see colors I tend to make myself scarce when I am on the bike.
As a side note, I almost drowned in Hat Creek back when I was about 4 [~1954] and my family was visiting Aunt Lola at her home there on Hat Creek. Fell in and got hung up on a small log under a foot bridge. Bidwell descendants dontcha know
ReplyDeleteMost of VFDs in Upstate NY have BBQ chicken with mac salad for a side.
ReplyDeleteSangria - acidic because of the citrus. Ceramic goblet - possible lead glazing. Not a good combo.
ReplyDeleteCalifornia still holds a place in my heart when I remember what we shared before the divorce....
ReplyDeleteThanks for coming out yesterday, sorry I missed you. You must have stopped by the booth one of the times I wandered off... had to go buy honey from my neighbor’s booth (Heitkam Hat Creek Honey), a pen made from rebar from the McKay brothers’ booth and a couple bottles of lemon-eucalyptus goat milk lotion from the GTD Ranch - great for keeping the mosquitoes away! It was a smaller crowd than normal, the heat and three local funerals that day limited the turnout. Still, it was great to see familiar faces and catch up with folks. Lots of good people up here in eastern Shasta County!
ReplyDeleteAnd not only is the pond there at the Hat Creek Hereford Ranch Campground good for swimming, there are some good sized trout in there. I saw a young man walking away from the pond with his pole and two trout that were plump and at least 12”-14” - nothing better to eat while camping than a fresh caught trout.
DeleteI saw a kid fishing there, maybe it was the same person. Amazing that with all the splashing around the trout would bite!
