And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
A family heirloom is a personalized signed illustrated copy of Smoky. My father got it from his parents, and I gave it to a cousin who is a horseman after Dad dies.
I happened to read "The Virginian" when I was down with covid in '20, opened up all those western authors from the time for me.
The bad guy's name is "Tragus" IIRC. Names similar to it, like "Travis" turn up in western writing, TV, etc.
I read "The Oxbow Incident" again also, although written c.1940. The book and film are both excellent. A very young Tony Quinn appears, his looks striking.
Will James' cabin is just across the river from here in a corner of the Four Dances Recreation Area. The word is he'd use the cabin when he needed to sleep off a drunk before going home to his ranch on Pryor Creek. Later he had a home here in town on Smokey Lane.
Will James; I think I read some of his stuff when I was a kid. He's from the first half of the twentieth century.
ReplyDeleteYes! Probably the best audio book I've ever heard is "My Life as a Cowboy".

The pen and ink of the steer is also a fine piece.
