In 2004, Michael Schumacher's Schuberth RF 1.5 helmet was a prototype made of multi-layered carbon fiber. It was so strong that they rolled a tank over it, and it stayed intact. The helmet cost around $20,000 at the time. It was this carbon layering technology that saved Felipe Massa at Hungary 2009

  1. Might be too strong. Part of the energy absorption was delamination of the shell in a high energy impact.

  4. Well, to be honest, I can't identify the armored vehicle depicted, but it's got single pin track blocks and doesn't appear to be a "heavy". And even if it was a full blown panzer, ground pressure is not all that one would assume it to be... rough estimate for a big boy is ground pressure per square inch roughly equal to a 180lb. grunt with full kit wearing size 10 boots.
So if you can stand on a helmet, you can drive a modern tank over one.

  6. It's useless if your head is going 60 mph and stops instantly. Your skull will be intact, but your brains will be mush.

  7. Luckily, my last helmet was 'only' $879. Marked down from $1059 since it was 2yrs old (and I'd just bought a $5K motorcycle). 2019 Arai Isle of Man helmet.
And yes, you only live once. But the only difference between a head hit at 60mph with a helmet or without one is an open or closed casket.
