The Pan American Airways “American Clipper” over New York in 1931. She was one of three Sikorsky S-40 amphibians and could carry a total of thirty-eight passengers.

  1. Igor Sikorsky = pure genius. His S-64 helicopter design is still cutting edge 70 years later, thanks in no small part to fellow genius Jack Erickson.

  2. My dad grew up in the East Bay. He had a copy of this print on his office wall.

  3. We are looking south; down the Hudson River. Manhattan on our right. The soldiers and sailors monument is plainly visible under the port wing. It seems like all the pictures of skyscrapers and flying aircraft show a haze. Smog?
We sure have cleaned things up since then

    1. note the rail tracks. the further west side was one long terminal, track, elevated and street level.

this was originally the Lehigh Valley terminal on the Hudson River, note the detail, etc. Art Deco, I believe. A showpiece. Still there.

  4. As I look out upon this homestead towering above the valley on an alluvial hill in these Buckeye Hills the New York aerial view seems like something I read in Dante's Inferno years ago .
