Sprats? I'm tempted to spring for these just to see what a "sprat" might taste like.

  2. I think a "sprat" is a sardine with pretensions of grandeur.

  3. I buy those all the time at a Russian/Ukrainian store near me where English is a second language. They are outstanding, lightly Smokey flavored, sardine like fish. Any small fish can qualify as a sprat.

  5. Those are good ones - go for it. Sprats are not as fishy as sardines.

  6. Russian wife makes sprat/sardine sandwiches for holiday parties, brave souls are first to try but soon becomes hit of every party. Extended family members now ask in advance if she plans to make them.

Cut French bread into slices. Toast bread. rub down with garlic like a cheese grater. Spread mayo. Add one fish (pref tail removed), tomato piece, cucumber piece, sprig of dill. Enjoy
