Native American Stand Watie Brigadier General Confederate States of America also known as Tawkertawker of the Cherokee Nation Was the only Native American to attain a general’s rank in the US Civil War, Confederacy or Union. He was supposedly the last CSA general in the field to surrender.
Don Edwards refers to Stand Watie in his song "Coyotes". I also always thought Chief Dan George's character "Lone Watie" in "The Outlaw Josey Wales" was a reference to Stand Watie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMBxuk0r6QQ
ReplyDelete"I didn't surrender, but they took my horse and made him surrender. They have him pulling a wagon up in Kansas, I bet."
DeleteMy favorite was when Josey Wales said "everytime I get to liking someone, they ain't around for long" and Lone Watie says "I noticed when you get to disliking someone they ain't around for long neither".
DeleteRead a book in grade school, 55-60 years ago, titled "Rifles for Watie." Don't recall anything but the title.
