And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Apparently the weather at Scott AFB is so fine today that only mission essential staff have to come in to work
We had a storm come through Minot AFB back @ Winter '77-78, that between the -40 temps and 50+ knot winds, they grounded the 5th Bomb Wing. (91st Missile Wing maintained the Alert, though, even if some of us were stuck down in the Holes for three days!)
No matter what my job was at the gas company I always considered myself "Essential". When I worked in Gas Control my boss told me about when that office had been in Tulsa and a bad winter storm was on its way so employees were told that non essential could take off and go home early. So he watched out the window as people that deemed themselves non essential left work. When budget cuts come non essential translates to not needed.
When I was stationed at Scott AFB I would run laps around the flightline. I have photos of me after winning a run on base, in my red/white/blue $5 jogging shoes, cut-off bluejeans, and red bandana around my head. I've deteriorated since then...
Growing up my uncle was based there. We kids would swim in the Airman's pool right beside the runway. We loved it. He lived in the Turkey Hill radar station (radar was closed but housing was still in use). Loved that place. I remember we were driving to it and saw a C141 with a bunch of people and a cement mixer-like on the back of a truck. They had been trying to load it for hours. Uncle pulled over and walked over, gave some directions and ten minutes later it was loaded. He was old school SMS loadmaster.
I drive by MidAmerica airport when I go visit my son in the KC area. I-64 goes right by that and O'Fallon. Boeing has a facility on the civie side across from Scott and I've seen a C-17 parked there a few times when driving by.

ReplyDeleteIt's a perfect day here in O'Fallon, if you like demo derby style driving. Snow on top of Sleet makes for a sporty time!

O'Fallon, Illinois?
DeleteYep!

In that case, you're neighbors with the LT. He's in O'Fallon too. Small world.
DeleteAnother beauty in the Frozen Freakin’ North. -35 F when I left for work an hour ago. Only -25 F at the hangar. Damn urban heat island….
