  1. My grandfather had been in San Francisco during the quake in '06. The ferries to Alameda or Marin would only let you on if you had real gold or silver, no paper money. It was a long walk south..
    After I was born he build a glassed frame with green felt and five silver dollars glued to it, "so I'd never be broke"
    My mom said he looked for and couldn't find a $5 gold piece (this was 1953) so he settled for the silver dollars.
    I gave it to my oldest granddaughter when I moved to the RV in 2012...
