And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? Two high ranking German officers being transported by soldiers of the US 4th Armored Division in a Ford GPW jeep - March 31 1945
"The personal commitment of two German officers protects the city from a thorough bombardment by the advancing American troops; City Commander Major Moller lettings against all resistance from the military and party offices Hersfeld of all; the retreating soldiers are overtaken by the American tanks advancing on the highway, blown up and partly captured; Among the prisoners is Captain Karl Guntzel, who informs the Americans that the city is vacant; he is going to the city with an American major to discuss the transfer conditions; At about 2:00 pm, the first American tank departments move into the city undisturbed."
