  1. Always wondered what the cost/benefit of the drag of the unretracted tail wheel versus the weight of the wheel retraction machinery.

  2. The retractable tail wheel wasn't in widespread use until 1943. Ten years after work on the Bf-109 started. They were still a novelty used on only a few US military aircraft in 1939-1940. I was always amazed at how SMALL the Bf-109 and the Fw-190 were. Until mid war (and a new wing) they could only fit three guns. But like most German weapons. The aircraft of Nazi Germany were grossly overrated. ---Ray
