And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
That's what the US WWII Mk 14 and Mk 15 torpedo's magnetic pistols were supposed to do, as well as those fitted to the German G7a. A lack of proper testing meant both US and German torpedoes exploded prematurely or not at all. The US Mk 6 exploder was tested only once. The German contact exploders were faulty, too, but not as bad as ours. Same with torpedo depth control. Interesting parallels.
From the books I've read the Jap Long-Lance yes. The U.S. Navy's Mark-11, 12, 13 torpedoes not so much.
ReplyDeleteAs a current Sonar Chief I can agree with the torpedo’s severity. Our torps have come a long way from the 11s - 13s. :)
ReplyDeleteWhen you explode under the ship, you break it's back like this.
