And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Visited by quail this morning
Found this guy perched on a rock in the backyard this rainy morning.
He didn't like me pointing the camera at him, and made his way back to the patch of forest next to the house.
He's a handsome fellow. That variety of quail taste terrrible... don't be eat'n. Besides they work as a good early warning system and are great fun to watch.
Brig, I disagree. The California valley Quail can be delicious! Probably depends on what their main diet is. Every morning I see a covey of quail, at least a dozen turkeys, 10 goose families with goslings, and at least three deer. Haven't harvested any of these because they are fun to watch. I do get a craving for roast goose, though. Nothing like crispy goose skin. And the fat is perfect for frying potatoes.
Greeting from wet and wild Pine Grove! MfG Goetz Still, I'd hate to break up a family.
None of my crew likes to eat goose, but my youngest grandson likes the good amount he makes each season from his goose pots. I miss being out where the critters are...
Gambel's quail (like that one) is real good eatin'. Pan fry it up in some butter and a little salt. It's all white meat, not a bit like dove which is all dark meat and too "gamy" for my taste.
they are wonderful to watch and even better to eat after wrapped in bacon. Put out food for those critters and you wont be disappointed. Same for dove.

They’re fun to watch, better to eat (at least in AZ).

ReplyDeleteYes, I know they are good eat'n but so fun to watch, I can't eat the Gambels.
ReplyDeleteOne of my BIL's commented that they would run over him singing out when he was deep undercover on a stakeout...
They are like Ring-Necked Pheasant and Doves, a lot of work for little meat...
ReplyDeleteNo better than Pheasant, Chucker or Dove. Just a different bird to eat and how you cook it.
ReplyDeleteNot a Gambel's quail. It is quite clearly a California Valley Quail. I am not aware of any Gambel's living outside a hot desert environment.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct. Sorry I was not paying enough attention to which quail I typed in.
