And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
My father drove tractor trailers for most of his adult life. From when I was a boy I remember the rig he owned. 1958 Autocar. It had a front windshield that flipped out to allow air in. In 1972 he bought a new complete cab for it. Drove that rig for a very long time.
That truck put food on our table and kept us under a nice roof.
To call the inside of that old Autocar Spartan would be an understatement. There was no passenger side seating. There were gearshifts and brake levers and too many things that looked like they required work to manipulate.
My father was a tough man.
As time wore on the trucks got better, more powerful and easier to drive. His last rig was a well worn 2005 Volvo. I remember him saying the odometer just ticked over 1 Million miles. "Just getting broke in" he said.
Lost dad almost 4 years ago. Miss ya pop.
One interesting aside. That Autocar company was eventually consolidated with the White Motor Company. They were a huge producer of heavy duty trucks. Later Volvo absorbed White. So maybe there was just a little bit of that old Autocar still riding along with dad in his Volvo?
That's neat.
