And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
30.06 has killed every, thing, larger than a mouse on this planet. It's all about where you put the bullet. And, if you're where polar bears live, you better be prepared and ready.
so, you don't consider the 454C to be adequate? I don't consider any pistol cartridge good nuf for a polar bear or pretty much any bear. they are on the top of the food chain almost anywhere. saw one in Alaska take a swipe at a killer whale that wanted the seal he/she was munching on at the waters edge. I don't think bears give a shit. if it's slower than a bear it must be edible. they try everything. my personal all time fav survival rifle is a ruger single shot chambered in .338 win mag. only because a ma duce be a little bulky. should you bring grenades? but if that was poking his head over the boats gunnel and I had a 454C on me, I would be an enthusiastic supporter of the cartridge in any case. so long as it worked. i would hope. then i would change my drawers.
"Yes Jane. Bring the Grenades" NO hand gun has a big enough "boom" to say no to big browns or polars. It is your last resort. Nothing more. Thinking anything else will turn you into bear shit.---Ray
I once knew a guy in northern Greenland who was a full time hunter. He hunted, among other things, polar bears. I once asked him which caliber he used for polar bears. He shot them with .222 Remington, the smaller sibling of .223 /5.56! Never had a problem, he killed them dead. I asked him why on earth he didn't use a .30-06 or an elephant rifle (both common in Northern Greenland). "Well", he said, "it is the only rifle I have." This guy purposefully and deliberately sought out the biggest, baddest predator around armed only with a pea shooter. BRASS. BALLS. /RAF
Al Gore predicted that they'd be extinct last year. Trust in Gore, that Gore that the bear is eating is not your guts.
I think that the 460 S&W would be a good place to begin, but I'm with the rifle shooters. Frankly, even an old 45/70 with penetrator cartridges would do the job, but you'd need to place the shots. It would only take one swipe with the claws to end you.

Deletethis is really reminding me of the hildabeast looking over her prospects for 2020.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's just looking for a Coke. And some cute penguins to share it with. Cue the sappy music!

Your friend sounds like the kind of guy that would go hunting black bear with a flyswatter.
