This is kind of hippy carpenter, but still, it reminds me of a more finished version of the cabin Dick Prenneke built up in Alaska.
This one is in Nehalem, Oregon, and presents an ethic for living that we all may want or even need to adopt in the years to come. The 5,000 square foot mansion so popular with the striving set may serve to put a big fat target on your back in a world ruined by a progressive ethic of wealth redistribution and class antagonism. A very modest existence may well be a better choice in every way.

The house is good for one person. Not bad for a weekender for more than one. For a longer time, there would need to be a bath house (Japanese style would be OK). It's not the slightest bit defensible and that would worry me. I realize that remote may pass for a defensive posture, but I see no space for storage for food or water. Maybe he didn't mention it.
ReplyDeleteYou could add an Icelandic woman no problem.
DeleteMost people seem to think that the SHTF situation will result in a total breakdown of all law and order. More likely, the authorities will maintain some rough control, but will seek to buy the peace of the underclass by transferring wealth from everyone else. In that more likely situation, those powers will see a huge house and a fancy car as a license to plunder, using whatever coercive power they have left. From the other end, the jealous and impoverished underclass will seek openings to steal anything they can under the noses of whatever authority still exists. Again, big house/fancy car makes you a target. Better to keep a low profile from both, and seem like there is little or nothing to take or tax away.
I prefer a concept where it's an iceberg. Little cabin on top of 3 or 4 buried shipping containers.
ReplyDeleteOooh! I like that.
Deletedoesn't appear like it would be much fun in the real "live in it" world. No storage, no facilities, no nada... and "he had a friend that made cookies in a similar wood stove" PPPPlease...
ReplyDeleteBrighid, the little "earth boy" who built it did so to be cool, not to be really "lived in".
DeleteAt the same time, I like Mr. Swanson's ideas for remote cabins.
Just me, having no time for "earth boy" waxing on about his "play" house.
DeleteI have liked Mr Swanson's remote cabins, as well. A Real remote cabin would be outstanding, I'm not giving up on that anytime soon...
