God of the Battlefield

  1. One day I was at the Yuma test center and they were having an open house... they had a lot of equipment on display including the trailer mounted cameras that take those photos.
    Neat stuff.

  3. Accounts in the 404 of those M triple sevens while high precision, can't stand constant use required with the tempo of combat operations, things like to swap barrels requires basically factory refurb, compared to the ex Soviet and new RF arty which are very stout, last considerably more rounds fired and are field rebuildable.

  4. And the less-than-mental-giant most recent past Commandant of the Marine Corps $hit canned all towed arty ... Why? Because he is a non-combat video game player with no real understanding of the need for troop support in the field.

    1. That certainly is what the "cannon cockers" think of themselves.

    2. The US Army calls Artillery the King of Battle.
The Russians call it the God of War. And called it that when they were officially godless communists.

    3. US Marines in battle call in arty for support... who the heck cares what the "cannon cockers" think of themselves... just shoot!!!

      They were both Marine artillery.

  7. With the proliferation of precision guided munitions and drones, I’m wondering if things like tanks and artillery are too vulnerable, especially due to their long logistics tail. Thoughts?

    1. If you ask the "experts" who have exactly zero battlefield experience, they'll tell you anything that you might want to hear. For me, tanks and arty are the lifeblood of the infantry support in battle.

    2. As long as you have air superiority and can keep them feed. But what if the supply trucks keep getting hit by cheap drones?

  8. Outgoing fire has a different sound than incoming fire. I was at Salerno Afghanistan and the Denver Bronco's cheerleaders had done a USO show. They were waiting on air travel like I was. They freaked when the 105's laid down a barrage of indirect fire. I was their hero when I got them to understand it was outgoing. Life was good until my helicopter showed up.

  9. Aww, USO shows. I saw one once. It was a Filipino all girl band playing rock and roll. Don't get me wrong, they were good. But it wasn't "something from home". I was told American entertainers weren't allowed "up north anymore". True or false I don't know.

  10. Like clockwork, on any cloudy day I can usually count on hearing artillery practice from the nearby Army base.
