  1. Used to eat them by the bushel in local dive crab houses on the Chesapeake shore. I saved the backfin for last.

  2. Ive had crabs from the west coast and from Florida and nothing IMHO compares with the Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab, especially if you snag one molting, then it’s a soft shell, and just remove the lungs and fry. Then place on a Martins Potato roll with some tarter sauce and you’ll thought you’ve died and gone to heaven

    1. Agreed! Chesapeake soft shell blues are wonderful. Makes me miss the Eastern Shore.

    2. 💯% truth right there. Great eating. Though you may want to have some burgers for your grill to supplement, unless you have the time to pick and eat a literal bushel of crabs.

  3. Catch crabs in Maine, they look similar, use a star trap, can catch enough to have a feed in a few hours, ( squid too), never tried a blue, fresh within couple hours hard to beat the flavor.

  4. Aye, they are the best eatin' you'll have.

  5. I lived in Maryland for nine years. Crab was all the rage. I never had one, just doesn't appeal to me especially with that gawdawful Old Bay seasoning.

    1. It is important to vet your wife’s lovers, don’t want any bad crabs

    2. I understand that NO seasoning suits ALL people, but I have yet to meet a single person who has had Chesapeake Bay Blue Crabs steamed with Old Bay seasoning who didn't absolutely love them. I'm sure they're out there, though. I did note you never had one of the crabs you dis. That just could be a loss for you--but more crabs remaining for me and others!

    3. Perhaps Old Bay is something you're born with a predilection to. Similar to St. Louisans and provel cheese...

  6. Faidley's in Baltimore makes the best crab cakes I've had, and they're available mail order (you fry them up yourself).

    1. I can eat lots of crab cakes, but I can't stand softshell crabs. Its like chewing on fingernails.

    2. Faidleys is good, went there when I lived near Baltimore, but also try G & M Restaurant near BWI airport. Absolutely great crab cakes and food in general.

  7. They're fun to catch -- just drop a chicken neck on a string into the Chesapeake Bay, wait a bit, then pull it up slowly. You'll usually find one still chewing on it, and you just scoop it up with a net.

    1. That's how we did it. I used kite string.

  9. There was a place in Kent Narrows that used to make insanely good crab bisque with big lumps of back fin in it. The price for crabs nowadays has gotten beyond crazy. Someone needs to farm them.

When Obrycki's restaurant was in downtown Baltimore there was a saying on the wall, "The crabs you eat today slept last night in the Cheasapeake Bay!"
