And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Adults Designed This. Even As A Kid My Reaction Was "Yeeeech!"
Harley Earl designed it in its first year, and it was the first Chevy model to offer triple taillights and dual headlamps. The 348-cu.in. V-8s were available with four-barrel carburetors or three two-barrel ones. These engines produced between 250 and 345hp. Even though the car weighed 3650 pounds, it could run from 0-60mph in about 9 seconds. Around 130 miles per hour was the top speed.
My uncle towed a 59 El Camino 348 3 duece back from Detroit that he drag raced. He stored it in our garage and I helped him work on it. I was 14 but I wanted it badly! Started my love of El Caminos. Bubbarust
Remember that in the late 1950s, folks here in the United States were obsessed with rocket ships and outer space. So automobile design was influenced by the many models of cars with rocket-inspired "tail fins"!
Well, ragtop. The hardtop was better.
ReplyDeleteThey just always reminded me of an old cat lady.
ReplyDeleteWith horn-rimmed glasses.
Delete1959 was not a good year for understated restraint in American car design

High school buddy had one. Raced him one time on a borrowed Norton Thumper. I won but scared the crap outta myself doing it.
ReplyDeleteprice one now and try to say "yeeeech"
ReplyDeleteEven worse, it immediately followed the gorgeous 1958.
ReplyDeleteI still remember my reaction (and the location) when I saw my first '59.
The really gorgeous one was the 57….. the 58 looked like it had lost its 57 wings by and put on too much weight in menopause…
