  1. Well, ragtop. The hardtop was better.

  3. 1959 was not a good year for understated restraint in American car design

  4. Harley Earl designed it in its first year, and it was the first Chevy model to offer triple taillights and dual headlamps. The 348-cu.in. V-8s were available with four-barrel carburetors or three two-barrel ones. These engines produced between 250 and 345hp. Even though the car weighed 3650 pounds, it could run from 0-60mph in about 9 seconds. Around 130 miles per hour was the top speed.

    1. My uncle towed a 59 El Camino 348 3
duece back from Detroit that he drag raced. He stored it in our garage and I
helped him work on it. I was 14 but I
wanted it badly! Started my love of El
      Caminos.

  7. Even worse, it immediately followed the gorgeous 1958.

I still remember my reaction (and the location) when I saw my first '59.

  8. The really gorgeous one was the 57….. the 58 looked like it had lost its 57 wings by and put on too much weight in menopause…

  9. Remember that in the late 1950s, folks here in the United States were obsessed with rocket ships and outer space. So automobile design was influenced by the many models of cars with rocket-inspired "tail fins"!
