  2. F-8 Crusader, beautiful in the air, ugly on the ground. Hydraulics were a nightmare.

  3. The saying back then was, "When you're out of F-8s, you're out of fighters." Accompanied by an image of a sad looking pilot dripping a single tear. https://i.pinimg.com/736x/95/10/77/951077a59dc8f2faa3273d506c002c7c.jpg

  4. Spent 3 years working electronics in a F-8 squadron at NAS Dallas. Great times.

  5. Very well could be wrong, weren't these the last of the gunfighters?

  6. Read some old-time naval aviators' accounts about the fun of getting into and out of cockpits like that when the wheels were spotted right at the deck edge, with the nose hung over the side.

Then think about it at night.

  8. Ingenuity in aviation. The wing was hinged near the trailing edge, so that the entire thing could tip up. That allowed a higher angle of attack (and shortened the distances for takeoff and landing) without having to tip the entire airplane up, simplifying the landing gear. See Wikipedia.
