And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire dancing 'Pick Yourself Up' in πΊππππ π»πππ (1936).
There's been more than a few really good dancers....Cyd Charisse, Gene Kelly, Ann Miller(my father's favorite) and Donald O'Connor to name but a few, but Astaire and Rodgers had a certain class (and incredible talent) about them that was hard for anyone else to duplicate.
Not to throw water on the fire but it is my understanding that Fred as a first class azzhole who demanded perfection and when it did not happen, he threw a hissy fit.
"Older, balding. Can't act. Can't sing. Dances a little." - early talent scout summation on Fred Astaire, who went on to have a 76 year career in television, radio, and movies, winning an honorary Oscar, a Grammy Award, three Emmy awards, three Golden Globes, a BAFTA, an AFI Lifetime Achievment Award, and being the first honoree of the Kennedy Center Honors, after starring in 10 musical plays, 31 musical movies, four compilation movies, 8 non-musical films, hosting 4 television specials, and appearing in 15 other shows.

ReplyDeleteI could watch Miss Rogers dance all day long.
ReplyDelete"Did everything Fred did, except backwards and in high heels."
