A Lancaster GR. Mk. III from No.279 Squadron releases a Mk. IIA Airborne Lifeboat in 1945. These lifeboats were designed for air-sea rescue, dropped from modified aircraft to assist survivors of ocean emergencies.

  1. They were "designed for..." But did they really serve that purpose successfully?

    2. Yes they were successful. The Vickers Warwick was used to drop lifeboats successfully from 1943 onwards but they were prone to crashing if an engine failed. The Lancaster offered a longer range and could be flown safely with one or two engines shut down. The RAF used both types in the North Sea to rescue downed bomber crews.

  2. Do I see legs dangling from the airplane?
