Useful?

An Option

  1. I'd much rather use a soft shackle. Some are rated at 44,000 lbs, and aren't made of heavy metal that could be launched ballistically if a line broke.

  2. Easier than using a clevis, you only need one gloved hand, and there is no pin to drop in the mud or snow. The weather is always crappy when you need to pull someone out of the ditch.

  3. What if you don't have a ring to hook into?

  4. If you have a European car there will be a towing point at each end, it's an EU requirement.

My neighbour's '11 Chevy Malibu doesn't have one but some US market cars do. Consult your owner's manual. Whatever you do don't let the tow truck driver hook onto the front sway bar like some idiot did on my '86 535i years ago.

  5. I'm really impressed with the soft shackle, too. Very light, very flexible, stores in a soft sack. The eye that holds the knot is braided so it can slip, thus it's easy to get the knot through, and the harder you pull, the tighter it grips. No damage to the chrome or paint !
