And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Dive brake. Funny thing is that they extend lower than the landing gear. I watched one land one time when he couldn't get the dive brake retracted. Flew by the tower a few times then set it down. It sparked a few times and then burst into a huge ball a flame under the aircraft as bright as an arc weld as he rolled out. I thought he was going to punch out but by the time he got to the end of the rollout the fire was gone and so was the dive brake. The fire trucks were chasing him all the way and he just stopped and opened the canopy.
I know a little about A-7s but had never known about the dive brake. Do you know if the Air Force A-7Ds had them? The guard base near me when I grew up (Selfridge) had them for a long time. ~ Doctor Weasel
one of the best bombing platforms ever flown in combat. excellent record and flight readyness. always loved its shape, particularly the under chin intake, rugged elegance, form follows function, built numerous models of it as a kid,
Good picture of a Snake Eye bomb @ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General-purpose_bomb#Retarded_versions. The petals unfold backward and slow the bomb down so the (low-level) airplane can get out of the way without catching frag.
