The A-7 was known as the SLUF (Short Little Ugly Fucker), and was a bomb-truck design derived from the longer, faster F-8 Crusader. The F-8 had a pointed nose.
Not an aviator but never could figure the attraction of the Crusader-Corsair design. But what do I know! Day job of my Series Commander at Parris Island was flying F8 Crusaders out of Beaufort NAS. So the story goes, when a previous Series was at the rifle range, during an interval on the firing line, he made a low-level pass just behind the line. Troopy's were thrilled, no word on PTB reaction.
I am pretty sure that there has been only one "Corsair" aircraft. And I too have heard nothing but good things about that amazing prop-driven CAS plane.
If I ever win the mega millions lotto we're firing up the F4U factory again and ALL my friends get one with complimentary flying lessons. Not even joking. 70s kid and Pappy was my hero. 6 M2s in a flying muscle car! What's not to love?!
Step-dad flew one in Korea and worked on the design of the other as an Aero-engineer at LTV.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad flew a Corsair from the USS Essex during WWII. Swore it was the greatest fighter of it's time. Carried him safely thru the Pacific campaign.

DeleteYou're thinking of the F-8 Crusader fighter. Retired in the late 70's IIRC.
The A-7 was derived from F-8 and optimized for the attack role. The F-8 has a more elongated fuselage than the A-7.

DeleteDad was a engine mechanic on the A-7 Corsair II when he was in the USAF. They gave it the nickname of Sluf, Short Little Ugly F*****r.
