And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
When I was an ambulance driver in germany in the 70's I went to a car wreck where a VW beetle flew off the autobahn at a high rate of speed and the 230lb negro driver had been forced almost all the way through that little triangle window as the bug flipped 11 times. yeah, it was a mess. His young daughter was killed in it too.
We had a 58 VW bug when I was a kid. My sister and I would regularly sit in the way-back space right below the rear window. The only seatbelt we had was mom’s arm across our chest if we were sitting in the front seat!!
The 10 years or more I drove a VW Squareback I was looking at the shoulder of the road constantly, always wondering if this would be an accommodating place to pull over and work on the car. I saw many VWs out there and noticed all of the greasy fingerprints on the back lid. If you lift and close the lid often enough eventually the hinges wear out and there's no lid at all!

ReplyDeleteA friend bought a 1972 VW 411, removed the engine and replaced it with a 1.8L diesel reefer unit.
ReplyDeleteMy dad had a 63 Beetle that color. I learned to drive in that car!
