And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

The Classic, but hardcover and a bit pricy. An alternative below.
Shown is the original dust jacket. Thin glossy paper, easily ripped. Too bad because the art is beautifully done. Painted by Clifford himself.
I wouldn't call it a little book. The hardback is about 12 x 9" and around 800 pages. I got mine in 1980. The book expanded the number knots and hitches I use regularly.
Ashley details how he let down a 150' cliff with only a 50' rope. He was alone so had to figure how to retrieve the rope after fastening up above. His solution was a single half hitch. As long as its under tension, the hitch won't spill. He was successful.
I used the same to secure a 100 ton boat to the fuel dock in a current. A single line with a single half hitch around a piling kept the boat at the dock. On departure, we motored forward which loosed the hitch. Haul in and we're on iur way. Obviously I think that was very cool.
Ashley provides much more than other books or websites on the subject. Not only knots but hitches, splices, lashings, decorative knots, and more. Ashley's easy style of explanation is illustrative with a dash of humor.
Whatever your trade, Ashley is a tremendous resource well worth having.
Bought a friend of mine the former for his birthday. Expensive, yes, but worth it.

Out here at the boat yard we will give you hell if you can't tie a proper knot. Or if you can't tie a knot tie a lot.
ReplyDeleteDoes it cover knots to the head?
