  1. 8 50s forward....that'll take a bite outta' crime....Used to do a lot of work in the VI, mostly in St. Croix.....there was a guy who had a surplus B25 who used to fly in loads of "bananas" from South America....one night we were working on the runway, all the lights were off and notams issued, and we had shut down the machine to gas up....all of a sudden we hear those radials flying down the centerline....he flew over our heads and made a landing further up the runway....next day they busted the guy at the plane while unloading....

  3. In the field, some units added four more, two each outboard each side of the cockpit for an even dozen. Read an account somewhere of a of an officer from somewhere up the chain of command deciding to go on a mission to see first hand how well they worked. He sat in the right seat. The B-25 he was in attacked a Japanese destroyer. In the instant that the pilot fired, this officer just knew they had taken a direct hit in the nose and were going to die. But the explosion kept going. The pilot swept the length of the destroyer using his rudders. All return fire ceased.

    1. Besides adding the cheek packs for the additional 4 guns, they could lock the turret to align with the nose guns to total 14. I think there was an add-on trigger solenoid for the turret so the pilot could light them off all together.

  4. How long will they fire until they are empty? Those will do an incredible amount of damage to a target. Those are anti materiel rounds designed to punch through solid objects.

  5. Read an account years back how one Colonel put a nose mounted 105mm in one, how they literally used iron sights, get lined up in a shallow dive, put rounds just below the water-line on Japanese ships.
But 8 50's are got to be pretty fearsome too. Must of rattled the heck out of the airframe when they fire all of them at once. Boom Boom Boom.
Stood beside quad 50's on a amtrack, the concussion from the muzzle blast is stunning, and the shower of brass.
Whats .50 Ordnance now a round, $4 bucks? 8 fifties @ what, 750 rpm? One minute whats that cost? $24,000 a minute right?

  6. Read about Pappy Gunn. Jap had his family. He figured a way to make them pay. Read about the Bismarck Sea fight. We strafed those that lived while they floated.
