    1. desmo.

beyond that, in earlier, simpler forms it was a beautiful, devilish lover.

this later version I find overwrought.

  3. Ducati uses the desmodromic valve system, which allows higher RPM's where the regular valve system using springs would fail (,most valve spring systems hit the redline at 8000 rpms. Ducati can go up to 12-15,000 rpms for their race bikes.). Or huge energy losses given the need to use heavier valve springs. And the desmodromic valve system is more reliable than the valve spring system. Ideal for motorcycle racing (just my opinion.).

  4. Only the Italians can do RED like that. The only time I saw a Ducati driven at or below the speed limit was by a mechanic wearing overalls with the shop name on the back and his name on the front. Heck, he was indicating turns with both light AND hand signals.

  6. They make great engines. The 90 degree Vee and 170 firing order makes unique tourque, relatively long dwell time between cylinder firings, the long dwell between pulses gives the rear tire time to hook up very predictably, you can literally steer with the rear wheel. Raced Ducatis for 24 years, an air cooled 750SS, they only make 54rwhp stock, got mine eventualy up to 92-94 by changing the intake ports to straight downdraft, longest rod i could fit, and fabricating a fully tuned tapered header ex system, plus built a Titanium frame for reducing wieght, real fun to road race in the twins classes, it is highly competitive, no rules but displacement and limit on CC's depending if you have an aircooled engine, or pushrods like with a Buel or Motorguzzi, they can go to 1200cc max, the Ducati's max out at 750cc, because the Desmo valves have a power advantage, the Suzuki's max out at 650cc cause they have very nice pent rooof 4valve heads and water cooling, the rules equal everyone out pretty good, so a lot of the competition is about riders skill. Each bike has a small advantage over the rest, so there is a lot of tactics and strategy going on, and knowing the other racers racing skills.
A well set up Ducati is a hard bike to beat with a decent rider running it. That long engine pulse is a serious advantage if you know how to use it well. And they are real easy on tires too.
Only drawback is the horizontal cylinder head, it sticks out rather far, which limits wieght bias to 54% towards rear, minimum, because when you brake hard and your front suspension sets down, if you ride real hard, tire contact the top of the front head. I machine out the top of the head much as possible and welded in some thin sheet metal, made a big difference, it was only like an inch more clearance, but every bit counts in racing. You got to climb up on the gas tank like a guerrilla to put as much wieght forward as you can get, it improves the traction on the front wheel and that adds up in seconds per lap too. Its a game a of tiny percentages when everyone is trying to maximize every advantage. Thats a real fun part of it too. Real close racing, wherl to wheel, leaning on each other in the turns, winning by a cunt hair. No excitment like it in my book.
