And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

These things - spent a lot of kid money on these, back in the day. Favorite: the Beatnik Bandit.
I collected a bunch "for my son". I've still got'em. Cases of them. I went more for models of real things. Still do. I don't have room to display a lot of stuff but I in the last couple of years i've bought an '06 Ford GT, a '57 Ford (like the one I had) and a '53 Studebaker Commander Starliner Coupe (like I wish I'd had). Some of us never grow up.
My brother in law has a 53 stude (his dad bought it new in 53) in pieces in the garage, where's sat for the past 30 years. He's 73 now, has parkinsons and will never get it done. They're easy to tear apart but hard as hell to put back together.
My brother had a F1 Ferrari from 1964 that he dressed up by painting John Surtees white with blue trim helmet on the driver. He added the numbers on the car from one of the Grand Prices that year but I don't remember which one.
My 4 yr old grandson has tons and tons of these things. They helped potty train him. He knows every one and our favourite past time together besides reading is setting up the race tracks all over the house. My brother, born in 1953, still has all of his.
CW your trying to make me cry for all the Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars I once had
ReplyDeleteI had a few of those. And yes, the Beatnik Bandit.

DeleteThe Bandit was cool, but my personal fave is the Splittin' Image.

Gotta build one before I die.
If only to cruise in it over to El Segundo and pull up in front of Mattel HQ.
Also, the Silhouette was cool, but nowadays, it'd probably be powered by batteries.
DeleteNTTAWWT, but the max daily mileage sucks.

ReplyDeleteGo visit the Beatnik Bandit over the mountains in Reno. It's on display in the National Auto Museum. BTW, the VW bug was the fastest.
ReplyDeleteI still have the “Sky Show” car that would launch the plane. Need to find a plane again to make it complete…
ReplyDeleteI'm 68 and I have an old school buddy that still has his collection and displays it. Well, some of it. He's been an auto mechanic his whole life.
