And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
A look at these contraptions shows that tese people did not understand aerodynamic principles. Perhaps their ignorance is due to the knowledge gained by the Wrights through research was still guarded.
Or, they didn't bother to find out, or to make their own with research. The Wrights spent hour watching birds in flight. The Wrights built their own wind tunnel. The Wrights built an amazingly simple means to measure lift. They tested several hundred shapes for best design of wing and propeller blade. The Wrights did what Langley did not, even with his enormous financial backing, nor did Lillianthal.
The photos shown here are not progressions in flight. They are no more than fanciful feats for fame, not flight.
Laugh all you want at these efforts by primitives of a bygone era but nowadays we know that strapping a windmill or two on them makes each a fully flyable aircraft that is both sustainable and gluten-free. Trust the science.
Some truly strange looking aircraft actually fly. Generally they encounter two problems: They may have odd handling characteristics, and the flying industry is VERY traditional thinking. Appearance matters a LOT to them. Too often the looks can be more important than other factors.
Experimental Aircraft at the beginning of Flight were Just That - Experiments. Few designers took the Time to do basic 'Aerodynamic Research', so the Wright Bicycle & Aeroplane Company was First to Market with a viable Design. Other Designs that didn't Work contributed to basic knowledge by showing what >didn't< Work.
And we think Oceangate was a crazy idea
ReplyDeleteNot a bene none of those idiots are selling passenger seats for a quarter-mil a slot, nor trying to fly over Mt. Everest their first week.

I would imagine that for all of these contraptions, Dawn and Sunset are seen in the same photo.

ReplyDeleteIt'll never fly Orville.
