And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Always marketing his fights, Ali kept himself in the papers.
Ali probably would have said they've got the signed turned around so Joe can remember where he is. His trash-talking was at its best when he was slagging Joe Frazier.
I remember my Father telling me that his generation started respecting Elvis when he was drafted and served his country. They had no respect for the coward Ali who claimed to be a pacifist and his ocupation was beating people up.
Frazier/Ali 1 was the greatest pugilist contest of all time, IMHO. The next best was the Thrila in Manila, fight 3 between these two. Both came out of that series permanently damaged.
Frazier was a good and decent man who Ali disparaged, calling him a Gorilla, etc. Joe was twice the person Ali was. One of my all time favorite sports moments was when Joe knocked Ali on his ass in the 15th round of their first fight. That Ali got up from that left hook says a lot about his will and determination, but until late in his life, he was mostly a crappy person.

ReplyDeleteWhat a character…
ReplyDeleteI think that Joe's training "camp" was in a North Philly gym off of Broad Street.

ReplyDeleteNever liked Ali and his continually hugging folks in the ring. Hated his mouth as well.
ReplyDeleteLook at the size of Frazier's shoulders. Those are some powerhouses.
ReplyDelete"down goes frazier"

Those interviews Cosell did with Ali were something else.
ReplyDelete"I'm gonna hit Joe & hit Joe & hit Joe, Joe loves to get hit!"
ReplyDelete- Ali
