    BUT, ...

    All those design are aerodynamically unstable. They rely on the use of computers to make micro-adjustment to the control surfaces hundreds of times per minute.

    Without those computers, the pilot's only option is to bail out.

  4. The Chinese added the flexible canards, which might become problematic at high speeds. They do make it somewhat more agile during subsonic, however.

    1. My initial take is that they will mess up the radar signature, so J-20 will be much less stealthy than the others. Haven't done any modeling on this but canards are quite likely to increase the radar cross section by themselves and by interaction with the wings and other structures.

    2. Some of it was stolen, but China is now one of the top two or three technology innovators in the world. They have 8 times as many engineers and scientist as we do, and they graduate 10 to12 times as many as we do every year. About 30% of the graduate students in US STEM programs are Chinese citizens. Numbers count, and China can staff many more projects and to a higher level than we can. They also generate more high quality scientific papers and get more patents than we do. At least in science and engineering China, is number one, and we are two or three. Russia, with 40% of our population has as many engineers and scientists as we do, and their STEM programs are generally better than ours.

      But do they get their pronouns right? And we definitely outclass them in Gender Studies majors.
      I've never been so glad that I dropped out of a Liberal Arts College before.

  9. SU-57 intakes are old school, 4th generation while you can see that the J-20 intakes matches the F-35 almost exactly. IMO, the F-22 looks graceful while the F-35 just looks intimidating....and the J-20 looks like someone watched too many Japanese anime movies.

  10. The J-20 has a limited life on full afterburner. What is missing here is the J-31 which is a little smaller than the J-20 and it looks a lot more like a F-22. The J-31 has had engine issues and the only ones to make more than one flight has used the J-17 engines which are underpowered for the airframe so it spends a lot of time hitting the afterburners. The Chinese jet engines are their weak link.

The Chengdu and the Sukhoi show up on radar like a flashlight in a dark room, the Lightning II is a bit better but fortunately can detect a missile launch and track so many incoming threats you'd have to be suicidal to take a hit. The Raptor should have seen more production, but John McCain personally killed the project...for some reason.
